Do you have the smarts to make your escape in time?! #Krakit

Have you ever had a dream about being trapped somewhere and you had to solve riddles and clues to get you out?

Trapped in a room

They always seem to be occurring in uncomfortable environments like decrepit mental hospitals, abandoned buildings or during an apocalypse.

Well now, you can make that dream a reality (without the impending death part).

Krakit

Krakit is a new Room Escape experience, located in Burnaby. There are four theme rooms to choose from: Butcher, Asylum, Zombie Apocalypse and currently, Nightmare Before Christmas, where you get to test your thinking skills to successfully escape within 45 minutes before your fate is sealed.

Solve clues hidden right before your eyes to proceed throughout the experience. On occasion you may even have a visitor pop up while you’re concentrating on your task at hand.

Krakit is a fantastic addition to a night out before having dinner or hitting up the local bar. Grab your friends and work together as a team or organize a team building experience with your colleagues or community group.

My best friend from childhood joined me as we pursued The Asylum. She was “the friend” who, at every sleepover, insisted on renting Horror movies. She was the bravest of all of us back then, but now…mwah ha ha ha, it’s payback sista! She even wore a MASSIVE ring just in case we needed protection!

Protection

Together, we read clues, turned the rooms upside down and communicated with each other to try to solve the riddles. Throughout the game, you are allowed three “helps” in the event of getting stuck. With both of us being too stubborn to ask for help, we burned up a lot of our time in the first room. We did cave at one point and ask for help. Apparently everyone does it, so we really aren’t that lame 😉

The second room was easier for us as we quickly made it through the clues, unlocking various objects. We even got spooked a couple of times, throwing us off our concentration and adding to the excitement!

In the end, we finished 5 minutes past the allotted time, but it was totally worth it. We had so much fun and learned how well we work together. I think we need to try out for Amazing Race Canada next! We’ve already planned to go back to try another room and we’re going to bring more friends with us.

Planning a kids party doesn’t need to be stressful. #YMCCommunity

We just celebrated our son’s second Birthday.

Happy Birthday

It was a small event, but it was all that we needed.

There was food, toys, crafts and all the kids that attended where completely engaged. We didn’t go over the top with a theme, decorations or food, like all of the Pins that you can find on Pinterest, or a magnificent spread that would have impressed the Beckham’s, had they been invited.

We served pizza, fruits & veggies, some snack foods, juice boxes and water.

The masterpiece of the event was the cake made by Sugar’n’Spice & Everything Iced.

Sebastian's Bday Cake

What a gorgeous cake! And it was so moist and flavourful too!

The party was only for two hours, but that’s all kids need before they start to get tired and grumpy.

Up next will be our daughter’s fifth Birthday Party in October. This one will have an older group of kids, but keeping them entertained and fed is still paramount, we just need to make it more age appropriate.

Birthday Party

How do you find planning your children’s parties? Do you go over the top with planning, decor and food or do you go with the flow and keep costs down by being more simple and frugal?

Spend a day at the farm with the kids! {Giveaway} #MaplewoodFarm

Looking for things to do with the kids can be a real chore sometimes.

You want to keep them busy, entertained, burning off excess energy and generally having a good time.

Playground

The playgrounds can get repetitive and often so busy that it’s hard to keep a watchful eye when you have more than one kidlet in tow, especially ones in the “Toddler Years”! These little guys aren’t the best listeners, nor do they understand the concept of gravity. They like to follow in the big kids steps and when it involves climbing the spider-web-like apparatus, my spidey senses start to tingle and my heart races. I’m much more comfortable when we’re in an enclosed, ground level environment.

There is a variety of kid-friendly things to do in the Lower Mainland.

Maplewood Farm is a quaint little farm that kids love to visit.

The residents include some ponies, horses, cows, donkeys, sheep, bunnies, goats, chickens, goats, a parrot, turkeys, and a few other small birds.

You can purchase a bag of seed when you arrive and go feed the chickens, ducks and geese in the pond.

The resident parrot will greet you when you go say “Hello!”

There are several tractors scattered around the farm that the kiddos can hop on and take for a spin. Our little man managed to find EVERY single one of them, and spent a good five minutes sitting on them and pushing them around, but never really pedaling them ’cause his wee leg couldn’t reach the pedals.

Our favourite spot is visiting with the goats!

North Vancouver-20140707-00305

These guys are so friendly that they insist on being pet and will probably butt you in the leg or back side to get your attention. Watch your clothes and bags as they WILL start to munch on anything.

Little Dude kept asking for Hi-5’s from the goats and when reminded to pet them from “head to bum”, he proceeded to pet the goats bum (under the tail to my shock!).

The resident Jersey cow, Lima gets a milking in the afternoon and the farmer shows you how to do it or you could go out back and “milk” the demo cow.

North Vancouver-20140707-00325If you bring your own fresh veggies, you can go visit the bunnies and give them a delicious snack.

There is so much to see and do at Maplewood Farm that your kiddos will have a lot of fun! Bring a picnic lunch and stay all day, but please don’t share it with the farm animals! They have a special diet and could get sick. The signs posted around the farm will remind you, just in case you forget.

If you have an upcoming Birthday, Maplewood Farm has several party packages available, including one that involves a pony ride!

Maplewood Farm has generously provided Raincity Parent with a 1 year Family Membership to the farm ($126 value)! This giveaway runs from July 14th-20th,  2014 and is open to residents of the Lower Mainland, BC (Vancouver and surrounding areas) only. Please enter via the Rafflecopter link below.

Creative Kid Crafting…the natural way. {Giveaway} #KissNaturals #YMCCommunity

Bored kids can really be a challenge some days.

Rainy days, Pro D days from school and sick days can really take a toll on parents when the kids can’t find anything to do.

You probably don’t want to plop them down in front of the TV or hand them your tablet to use just to get a little quiet time to yourself.

Crafts are a great way to keep the kiddos occupied.

They can be creative and depending on how intricate the craft, they can really keep them busy for a while.

Two thumbs up to that idea!

Bring the jungle gym right to your front door! #VancouverTumblebus #YMCCommunity

When planning a party for the kiddos, a few thoughts come to mind…

Do I have the space to accommodate the the kids, what can we do to keep them entertained, and what’s not going to break the bank?

image

Young kids, generally have a lot of energy to burn, so having physical activities is a great way for them to burn off their excess enthusiasm and the sugar coursing through their bodies from the candies and cake that they’ve just consumed.

In the Summer months, you can take advantage of the great weather, and hit up one of the local parks where the weelets can run around like maniacs, climb, slide and swing their little hearts out, and frolic about in the spray park.

image

When the weather is less that co-operative, or you’d like to have the party at your home, but don’t have the space or the equipment, there is a solution!

The Vancouver Tumblebus! Perfect for kids ages 2-9yo.

image

A TUMBLEBUS® is a gym on wheels filled with fun equipment—bars, beam, vault, mountain, trampoline, rings, zipline, monkey bars and much more—thereby bringing the best possible physical education class to children at daycares, elementary schools, private schools, special events, birthday parties and everywhere else!
