Yule Duel: Vancouver’s Largest Outdoor Competition Returns to Gastown

The Yule Duel event is on for one night only – so it’s a can’t-miss event to kick-off the Christmas season in Vancouver. As well, the event is more than just a carolling competition, as it is a way for the participating choirs and the community to give back by fundraising for May’s Place which provides much-needed compassionate end-of-life care to vulnerable people in the Downtown Eastside.

Yule Duel brings together Vancouver’s top choirs and some of the city’s most notable personalities to fundraise for May’s Place which provides much needed, compassionate end-of-life care to vulnerable people in the Downtown Eastside.

When: December 1, from 6-9 PM.

Where: Along Water Street in Vancouver’s vibrant Gastown.

What to expect: Choirs will be performing along Water Street. People can wander the street to enjoy a diverse selection of carolling performances by over 20 of Vancouver’s top choirs, each with a unique style ranging from rock to pop to gospel. There are a number of opportunities for people to make donations to the groups they like best.

Why the “Duel” in Yule Duel? Throughout the evening choirs will sing their hearts out in hopes of performing in a sing-off on the main stage. Everyone is welcome to vote for their favourite choir, by buying a button for $5 and casting a vote. Near 8pm, the panel of celebrity judges will select their favourite choirs from those with the most votes. The top two choirs will then ‘duel’ it out on stage.

Judges: This year’s judges include: John Fluevog, Fluevog Shoes; Morna Edmondson, Elektra Women’s Choir; Mike Forrester, Coastal Jazz; Rebecca Bollwitt, Miss 604; and Vision Councilor, Heather Deal.

MC: People will be entertained by hilarious and charming, Fred Lee.

Choirs: Saint James Music Academy Choir, the Lions Gate Chorus, and Vancouver Pops Choir are among the wide range of top level choirs you will see and hear.

“All donations received will be given to May’s Place, which provides compassionate end-of-life care to some of the most vulnerable people in our community,” said Michele Sutherland, Manager of Hospice Services at May’s Place. “We’re so grateful for the generous support this event received last year, raising more than $38,000 to support our charity. We can’t wait to see what this year brings!”

Yule Duel is a joint partnership between the Gastown Business Improvement Society and The Bloom Group, the nonprofit operator of May’s Place. Media partners include Global TV, the Georgia Straight, and Miss 604. Local sponsors include Big Little, The Social Agency, Club Card, Richards Buell Sutton, Inform Interiors, and Miss604.com.

7th Annual Vancouver Christmas Market to Make Days Merry & Bright at New Seaside Site!

A treasured holiday tradition for locals and visitors alike, the Vancouver Christmas Market announced today that it will be moving from its original site at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Plaza to its new, expansive seaside home at Jack Poole Plaza (at the Olympic Cauldron). Running November 26 – December 30, 2016, the city’s signature yuletide celebration will expand its revelry with more than 50,000 square feet of space and over 70 huts in which to savour the abundance of authentic German flavours.

“Much like our market-goers after they’ve indulged in generous helpings of Glühwein and Spätzle – we found ourselves bursting at the seams last year!” said Malte Kluetz, Founder and President of the Vancouver Christmas Market. “We could not be more thrilled about the move and by the number of vendors who wish to share and participate in the market – nor by the hundreds of thousands of Vancouverites who make it an annual holiday tradition. The move to Jack Poole Plaza means we can warmly welcome more guests to partake in the festivities, while rolling out a number of exciting surprises! We look forward to welcoming new and returning guests to our enchanting seaside home.”

Among this year’s expanded highlights will be Canada’s first-ever Christmas Pyramid: A 23-foot tall structure adorned with angels representing various aspects of European culture. Designed locally by architect Jordan Kutev, the magical sculpture rotates via a propeller at its summit and plays music from various regions. Further festive additions this year include an enclosed Alpine Haus tent and seating area, designed to accommodate more than 250 people while offering breathtaking views of the North Shore.

Visitors can anticipate indulging in the market’s signature array of mouth-watering delectables, including Glühwein (a hot-spiced mulled wine), Bratwurst, Gulasch, Spätzle, and much more. The increased vendor space allows for the introduction of many new sensations, such as daily demonstrations of the Feuerzangenbowle (literally, ‘Fire Tongs Punch’), a mulled wine and rum beverage whose ceremonial preparations include caramelizing a large sugar cone over the concoction. In total, the market will boast more than 22 food and drink huts –12 of which will appear for the first time in 2016.

In addition to Deutschland delicacies, rousing entertainment, and returning favourites – such as the beloved Christmas Carousel – visitors can wander throughout the market’s quaint twinkling pathways of huts, discovering lovingly crafted, one-of-a-kind gifts and treasures that cry out to be slipped into stockings and placed under Christmas trees.

17th Annual #BrightNights at Stanley Park!

When the Christmas lights start popping up in our neighbourhood, our kids faces start lighting up just as bright!

The twinkling lights, animated ornaments, and if course the inflatables!

We love driving around town enjoying the displays that people have really put time and effort in. We live in a condo, so our contribution to the Christmas lights shows is minimal, but we do decorate our balcony to share the merriness of the season!

Back for it’s 17th year, Bright Nights in Stanley Park will be lighting up the forest with their magnificent Christmas light displays in support of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund. Over 800 fire fighters contribute more than 8,000 hours over the 3 month period of set-up, operations and tear down.

Bright Nights at Stanley Park

The monies raised from the donations received at the entrance gate go directly to the Burn Fund. Also, the Burn Fund is encouraging the visitors to show their generosity by making a contribution to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Most needed items include: canned meat/fish; natural peanut butter; whole wheat pasta/rice; pasta sauce; canned fruits/vegetables; 100% fruit juices; low-sugar cereals; baby food, formula & diapers. www.foodbank.bc.ca
