Help keep the kids from getting too crispy this summer! {Giveaway-2 Winners} #SunscreenBands

Do you remember when you were a kid, a sunburn was just part of Summer?

Sunburn

I don’t ever remember having sunscreen being applied to me before I headed out for a day in the sunshine. My Mum used to slather on the Ban de Soliel deep tanning oil and go lay outside for hours.

Now that I’m a Mum, I wouldn’t thin twice about applying sunscreen to my kidlets before we went out. Even on cloudy days.

Cover your kids in sunscreen

We are now aware of the dangers that can come from too much sun exposure. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause some serious skin damage and can contribute to skin cancer. It is so important that we protect our skin by wearing appropriate clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreens that have a broad spectrum SPF of 15 or over.

UV rays and their effect on skin

Sunscreens should be applied 20 minutes prior to sun exposure and should be reapplied regularly, after swimming, exercise or excessive sweating. For more information on how to use sunscreen correctly, please visit the Canadian Cancer Society’s website.

A great tool to help remind you to reapply your sunscreen are Sunscreen Bands.

Sunscreen BandsSunscreen Bands are a safe, non-toxic, recyclable product that is used along with your sunscreen. They help monitor your exposure to the sun by way of it”s colour changing abilities.

Put on a Sunscreen Band, apply a sunscreen with an SPF15 or higher to your skin AND on the band. Go play or work outside and as time goes by, the band will change colours, reminding you when it’s time to reapply your sunscreen and when you need to cover up or get out of the sun completely.

Colour changing abilities

This technology is so great, that now I feel safer going out in the sun with my kiddos knowing that even if I lose track of time, the Sunscreen Band is there to remind me when it’s time to refresh our application or head for the shade.

It’s also a great way to get the kids to head home from a day at the park and hopefully avoid any meltdowns that normally occur when Mum and Dad say that it’s time to go 😉

A place where the kids can go crazy!

If you have small kids, chances are you need a place to take them so that they can burn off the energy that they’ve drained from you and hopefully tire themselves out just in time for nap time or bed time. The experts say that kids need at least 60 minutes of exercise or active play every day.

There are several options available: organized activities or classes, the play area at the mall, open gym time at the local recreation centre, an indoor play centre, the playground (on nicer days) or maybe you have an awesome play room that the kids can go to town in and have some friends over to play with.

Trampoline

Trampoline, a favourite of ours.

At the playground.

At the playground.

We love to check out new places to go get our ya ya’s out. The kids can burn off energy in a safe environment and also make some new friends to play with.

And maybe, just maybe…Mom will start chatting with a fellow Mom, and a friendship will brew over our half cold coffees.

Where do you and the kids like to frequent?

That kid!

There is always kid in your child’s school or daycare that plays rougher than the other kids. But how do you deal with it when it’s becoming more violent?

Bully

Bully

Today this kid knocked down several kids in the playground. He wasn’t doing it in anger, just playing too rough and knocking these kids down. I supposed this would be considered bullying, right?

And the thing that irks me the most is that his Mom was standing nearby chatting with another Mom completely oblivious to what her son was up to!

She paid attention to the aftermath, when these kids, including my own, were crying. In one instance, she replied, “Well that boy scratched him too.”

Seriously!? Uh uh, no way! If that was my child doing that, I would stop them immediately, have them apologize, apologize myself and leave the playground!

This, to me, is the beginning of a bully and it needs to be corrected NOW!

How do you approach “That Kid” ‘s Mom?

I suppose you pull up your big girl panties and diplomatically approach, said Mom, and explain that their child is not behaving appropriately towards his or her friends and that they are getting hurt and upset.

To me, this Mom would get her back up and say, “Not my kid! Your child must have done something first to provoke mine.” Grrrrrrr.

Maybe you need to speak to the parents of the other kids who are being affected and have them approach her as well. Maybe then she’ll realize the issue.

I’m hoping for the best because this little guy could really be a great kid with some good redirection and correction.

If your little one is being bullied and having difficulty understanding what’s going on, check out this book that I came across, Pingo and the Preschool Bully.

Preschool, a great place to make new friends!

Preschool

We are now 3 weeks into preschool, and our little lady is loving it! No really, she can’t wait to go back and see her friends and play.

Every day she comes home to tell us that she loves her new friends and that she shared her snack with them.

Not only is she making new friends, but I’m making new friends too! Hanging with the Mommies after class in the playground, you can’t help but start chatting. It’s truly a wonderful thing when, not only the kids connect, but the Mommies do too.

Mommy Friends

We’ve already been invited to a Halloween party and in turn our wee lass has invited her friends to her upcoming 4th Birthday party.

Sweetly enough, these little fellas are both calling her their “girlfriend”:)
