9th Annual Vancouver Christmas Market

A treasured tradition for locals and visitors alike, the Vancouver Christmas Market returns to Jack Poole Plaza (at the Olympic Cauldron), November 21 – December 24, 2018, with extended hours from 11:30am to 9:30pm. The city’s signature yuletide celebration amplifies and expands its festive offerings with more than 80 huts stuffed with sweets, treats, and treasures, coupled with an increased lineup of large-scale activities and live entertainment. Attracting a record number of more than 220,000 visitors last season, the market remains one of Vancouver’s beloved holiday events in which to savour the abundance of authentic German-inspired sights, sounds, and flavours.

“Every season, families, couples, and friends make their annual pilgrimage to feast upon festive delights, warm themselves with mulled wine, shop for unique treasures, and share the Christmas cheer,” says Malte Kluetz, Founder and President of the Vancouver Christmas Market. “This year, we are thrilled to present even more engaging holiday experiences for visitors of all ages to create lasting memories with their loved ones. Whether gathering to indulge in traditional German delicacies, shopping together for that one-of-a-kind gift, or meeting with friends to take in a wide range of special events including Children’s Wish Weeks with an exclusive visit and on-site activity with Vancouver Canucks defenseman Erik Gudbranson, Deluxe Date Night, Kids Day, Club Christmas Thursdays, or Carousel Fridays, we look forward to welcoming new and returning guests to celebrate this joyous time of year!”

Among this year’s expanded highlights is a cozy heated Alpine Lounge where visitors will be able to relax and enjoy hot beverages and delicious food in a warm holiday environment. Afterwards, guests can make their way outside to revel in the new Winterdeck located beside the Alpine Lounge, featuring a charming entrance arch, a giant lit up picture frame, and stunning views of the North Shore. Couples will delight in venturing down Lovers’ Lane – an Instagram-worthy 30-foot long tunnel adorned with 10,000 twinkling lights and mistletoe. A Love Lock Installation will be placed near the tunnel to which lovers can attach a ‘Vancouver Christmas Market Love Lock’, serving as a beautiful symbol of love and partnership over the holiday season. Visitors will be dazzled by Santa in a 12-foot long sleigh floating underneath the Olympic Cauldron, and the return of Canada’s first-ever Walk-In Christmas Tree, glittering with 36,000 twinkling lights. These magnificent sights will provide the perfect backdrop for guests to take festive photos with family and friends and share in the magic of the season.

A huge draw to the Vancouver Christmas Market is its signature array of mouth-watering delectables, including Glühwein (a hot-spiced mulled wine), German Bratwurst, Gulasch, Spätzle, Schnitzel, Strudels, Transylvanian Chimney Cakes, a selection of German beer, award-winning German style wine, and so much more. A variety of new local vendors will be offering the best food and drink BC has to offer including organic vegan and vegetarian fare from the Organic Villa Vegan Haus, charcuterie from the Charcuterie Haus, sweet and savoury macarons prepared by Bon Macaron Patisserie, syrup-filled pancakes made by Mr. Hot Cakes, warm roasted chestnuts from JJ’s Fresh Roasted Chestnuts, and gluten free hard apple cider made by Howling Moon Craft Cider.

In addition to Deutschland delicacies and returning favourites – such as the Christmas Carousel and the Christmas Pyramid’s ‘Flying Stage’ perched 10 feet high above the market offering a lively line-up of daily festive entertainment, visitors can wander throughout the market’s quaint pathways of huts, discovering lovingly crafted gifts and treasures.

Families will enjoy a multitude of holiday activities including the market’s new Kinder Kraft Igloo sponsored by 4Cats Arts Studio, featuring a market-wide Christmas scavenger hunt for children, as well as free arts and crafts. The Santa Photo Hut also returns along with cookie decorating for kids at the Gingerbread Haus.

Shopping made a whole lot easier! #Flipp

Flyers…

flyers

Never around when you’re looking for something specific, or filling up your mailbox. A pain when it comes to comparing between stores. Better used to line a pets cage. Or something you use to start a campfire or fireplace.

Either way, they are wasteful and contributing to the tree shortage and global warming.

Flipp

Flipp is a FREE digital flyer app, that brings flyers into the digital age and allows users to browse through hundreds of digital flyers from all of their favourite retailers through their mobile devices. No more coupon clipping!

This is definitely UBER AWSOME!

When it comes to shopping for my family, I need to save money and time. So, if I can compare flyers digitally between different retailers, I don’t have to wait for a flyer to arrive at my door, leaf through the pile, potentially miss out on something if a particular flyer doesn’t arrive and be able to plan my outing efficiently.

Parents know that shopping efficiently is a HUGE feat when shopping with children! Shopping solo is a completely different story, we like to take as long as possible if it means some peaceful alone time.

Check out Flipp, download the app to your mobile device and never be without a flyer again when you’re out and about.

Separating the “wets” from the “drys”…no time for soggy messes. #LilBeanzBoutique

Have you ever taken the kiddos swimming and somehow, after you’ve tossed all their wet gear back into the pool bag, a sneaky sopping swimsuit managed to find your cell phone and grocery list and decided it was a great idea for a group hug?

Wet cell phone

This happened to me, and went un noticed until we happily arrived at the grocery store 15 minutes after leaving the pool.

My phone was wrecked and I had no idea what we were to pick up at the store because my list had disintegrated and I suffer from a serious case of Mommy Brain.

A friend told me about the Wet Bag that Lil’ Beanz Boutique carries.

20140331-105351.jpg

Wet Bags

This bag is great to use with cloth diapers. When you have a bum change, instead if tossing the soiled diaper in your diaper bag and contaminating the world or using a plastic grocery bag, this bag contains the soggy mess and keeps it’s contents from leaking out and having your diaper bag smell like a port-a-loo. It can also be used for wet swim duds or soiled clothing and also to keep your valuables from getting wet. It’s water-resistant and completely washable.

I use ours to keep my valuables safe and dry. No more messed up phone and my shopping list will remain legible.

We’re planning a beach holiday soon, so this fabuloso bag will be joining us and keeping our electronic devices, passports, money, keys and books safe from sun, sand and water while we get in some much needed quality family time.

There are so many more awesome products available from Lil’ Beanz Boutique! Be sure to visit their website or Facebook Page to check them out. I personally am in love with the Head/ Neck Pillows and the Minky Blankets!

Grocery shopping with small children in tow. #YMCCommunity

I’ve never minded going grocery shopping.

I enjoy cruising the aisles, checking out new and different types of foods to try out. And if you go to some of the bigger grocery stores, there’s more than just food to get you excited!

20140310-231351.jpg
There are toys, make-up, baby stuff, housewares, clothing, the list goes on. I prefer the convenience of this kind of shopping…especially when you have your kids with you.

On our last visit, we went after swim lessons, when the kids are starving and it’s nearing nap time.

I had a smallish list, but of course, as we’re racing through the store, dinner ideas are popping into my head and extra items are grabbed. Probably not the best idea to have when the weelets are getting antsy and hungrier by the minute.

Soon, the little Dude is reaching nuclear meltdown range and the diaper bag with snacks, is sitting safely in the van. He’d already destroyed the shopping list (which is now making our shopping trip even longer because now I have to decipher what it says through the drooly, chewed paper and running ink) and thrown my keys and his soother across the store SEVERAL times.

My "once was" grocery list.

My “once was” grocery list.

I gave him assorted items from the shopping cart to keep him distracted, but this didn’t work for long. He even gnawed through the bag of Babybel cheese!

Was there a mouse in that bag?

Was there a mouse in that bag?

Normally I would NEVER open an item that I’ve put in the shopping cart, before I pay for it, but wee man needed something to eat, stat! I gave him a fruit and veggie pouch and that bought me a few more minutes while we went through the checkout.

20140310-213837.jpg

GET ME OUT OF THIS JAIL!

Then as we’re putting the groceries on the conveyor belt, my daughter advised me that she needs to go potty “VERY BADLY MOM!”, and she’s holding her backside. She did have a bit-o-the-runs in the morning before swimming, so I’m thinking that she hasn’t quite finished what she had started before we went swimming.

Mom, I need to go potty!

Mom, I need to go potty!

Perfect, all I need now is a screaming and kicking toddler and a 4 year old with poopy pants, drawing attention to us in the grocery store.

Fortunately our cashier overhead our predicament, and blazed through ringing in our lot, so that we could dash to the loo post haste.

We made it!

No accidents, no tantrum, now just to get home before something else happens to make it even more of a stellar day.

Do you have a funny or not-so-funny story about shopping with your kids?

Oh Canada! Our home and…blah blah blah. #YMCCommunity

Driving along in the family car and a favourite song pops up on the radio. Everyone The kids starts singing along at the top of their lungs and dancing in their seats, and Mom and Dad have a good laugh. Next time I must take some video footage to use against them in the future 😉

We go shopping and another familiar song is heard over the speakers in the store. Singing ensues and possibly a little booty shaking. No, I’m not afraid to get my groove on in public when I’m out and about with the kids.

A movie, that we’ve the kids have watched a zillion times, finishes and the dancey dance starts as the credits roll.

The national anthem begins to play and the kids stand there with the look of a young cow at a new gate. Blank stareWhy haven’t we taught our kids “O Canada”?

We don’t go to sporting events, so I suppose it’s never occurred to us to sing it with them. I remember when I was a kid in elementary school, every morning before we started class, we’d sing the anthem. My parents didn’t teach it to me.

Do your kids know the words to their favourite songs better than the national anthem?

Just in case you aren’t familiar with the lyrics or you’d like to teach your kids, here they are:

O CANADA

O Canada! Our home and native land

True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise The true north, strong and free

From far and wide, O Canada We stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free

O Canada! We stand on guard for thee

O Canada! We stand on guard for thee.

Babyproofing…the next generation.

Babyproofing

As parents, we know that at some point during our child’s development, we will probably have to start baby proofing our homes to prevent our curious little creatures from getting into our cupboards, drawers, closets and whatever else their teeny hands can reach. There are dangers from accidental poisoning, electrocution, falling objects and just making a huge mess in general.

Mr. Trouble!

When toddlers attack!!!

This past weekend, I decided that we needed more baby proofing done around our home. I was getting tired of cleaning up messes, closing doors, taking things away and tripping over stuff. When our daughter was little, she never got into anything, but now that our little boy is getting bigger, the curiosity is abundant and a hair tie around the bathroom cabinet isn’t cutting the mustard anymore. So I broke down and loaded up on baby locks.

IMG_0515

Babyproofing gear!

So after installing the new “safety measures”, the Kidco toilet lock doesn’t work on our Toto toilet, and the retailer won’t return it (for hygienic reasons) because the package has been opened. The drawer locks won’t work either because the side that the latch is attached to is butted up against our stove, so this doesn’t allow for easy unlatching:( I’ve had to come up with a better solution in the mean time.

SPoon drawer

My current solution.

As you can see, this isn’t the best of solutions. Today the wee dude pulled all 3 drawers open, grabbed a couple of spice jars from the top one and decided that he’s bang them together. needless to say, one of the jars broke and miraculously, he avoided getting cut. I now have the garbage can situated in front of the bank of drawers. He also managed to break the sliding mirror door lock, open the door, pull out a package of lightbulbs and smash them on the floor. AWESOME, is the most appropriate sarcastic remark that I can come up with to describe how I feel about this new mayhem.

I am certain that the baby weight that I am currently trying to lose, will fall off in no time, with the constant chasing around and lack of eating because of the afore mentioned chasing around.

Next on my agenda…developing new babyproofing gizmos to keep my home toddler proof and safe from Captain Destroy Everything.
